Who’s Involved

The Museum of the History of Polish Jews will open in 2012 on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto. This multimedia narrative museum and cultural center will present the history of Polish Jews and the rich civilization they created over the course of almost 1000 years. Initiated by the Jewish Historical Institute Association in Warsaw in 1996, the Museum of the History of Polish Jews will be a unique institution. Not only is it the first and only museum to focus on the history of Polish Jews, but also it is a truly 21rst-century institution in every regard.

Using the latest historical research and most innovative exhibition design, the museum will immerse visitors in the world of Polish Jews and encourage exploration through a wide range of media, documents, and artifacts. As a cultural and educational center, the Museum will provide a unique learning environment, lively public programs, and singular meeting place for a diverse public.

THE ASSOCIATION OF THE JEWISH HISTORICAL INSTITUTE OF POLAND IS A NON- GOVERNMENTAL PUBLIC INTEREST ORGANIZATION. IT WAS REGISTERED IN 1951. THE PURPOSE OF ITS ACTIVITY IS TO PRESERVE AND COMMEMORATE THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF POLISH JEWS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO GLOBAL CULTURE.

Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland initiated the Museum of the History of Polish Jews project. Thanks to the early support of individual and institutional donors the world over and recognition of the value of the initiative in Poland and abroad, the AJHI was able to officially start the project in 1995 and gradually transform it into a national institution on a world stage.

On January 25, 2005, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, the Mayor of Warsaw, and the Chairman of the AJHI signed an agreement to establish a joint cultural institution named the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

The Museum is the first public-private institution of its kind in Poland, jointly established by the Polish Government, local government, and an NGO.

Under the founding act, the public party finances the construction of the Museum building. The City of Warsaw is responsible for management and accounting related to the building construction. The public party also covers the major part of the Museum’s current budget. Association primary responsibility is to finance and organize the production of the Core Exhibition.
